If You’re Arrested: Rights Checklist

Educational resources by Reed Nolan • Not legal advice

A calm plan beats panic. Use short, respectful words and keep movements slow. Assume non-legal calls are recorded — share logistics only (who/when/where), not case facts.

Say once or twice, then pause:
  • “I choose to remain silent. I want a lawyer.”
  • “I don’t consent to any searches.”

What to do

  • Keep hands visible; move slowly and narrate movements if needed (“I’m reaching for my ID”).
  • Provide ID if required; avoid explanations or guesses under stress.
  • Write a private timeline (who/when/where) while details are fresh.

What to avoid

  • Arguing roadside law or consenting to “quick looks.”
  • Posting details to social media; screenshots travel far and fast.
  • Group-text play-by-plays — keep updates factual and brief.
