Short rights script (say once or twice, then pause):
  • “Am I free to leave?”
  • “I choose to remain silent. I want a lawyer.”
  • “I don’t consent to any searches.”

Detention vs. arrest (plain English)

  • Detained: you’re not free to leave while officers investigate; usually brief.
  • Arrested: custody based on probable cause; typically followed by booking.
  • If you’re unsure which it is, ask: “Am I free to leave?”

What happens after an arrest

  • Booking at a local jail (ID, property, basic paperwork).
  • First court/arraignment date is set; ask counsel about bond/bail strategy.
  • Treat non-legal calls as recorded — share logistics only, not case facts.
